COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sept. 25, 2008) – Some of the best beach volleyball players from the last four decades will be part of a special legends match when the 2008 U.S. Open of Beach Volleyball, presented by Corona Extra, arrives in East Beach in Santa Barbara, Calif., this weekend.
Volleyball legend and Santa Barbara native Karch Kiraly, has gathered some old friends from the beach to play a special legends match on Friday, Sept. 26 at 5:30 p.m., PST.
Among the players expected to participate in the special match are for AVP great Brian Lewis, Santa Barbara legend Kathy Hanley, 1970s greats Jim Menges and Jon Lee and John Hastings.
“I grew up playing at East Beach and I would play all day long,” Kiraly said. “Having a chance to play with these guys again is not only a lot of fun for us; we hope it will be something special for the fans. Santa Barbara is Beach Volleyball City USA to me and this weekend is going to be a mix of serious competition, great fun and lasting memories.”
More than 500 beach volleyball players from around the nation will compete in this weekend’s U.S. Open of Beach Volleyball, presented by Corona Extra. The event is sanctioned by USA Volleyball.
Teams have qualified to compete through one of 24 different qualifier events held across the nation. Competition will be held in the following divisions:
Main draw play gets underway in all divisions on Saturday, Sept. 27. In addition, a special qualifying tournament will be held for both the men’s and women’s Open divisions on Friday, Sept. 26 to award the final eight berths in the Open division draws. This event is open to all players who wish to enter and compete in the Open divisions.
Spalding, whose King of the Beach all-weather volleyball has become the No. 1 selling competition volleyball in the outdoor market, has underwritten the entry fees of those teams that advanced to the U.S. Open through one of the 24 qualifier events in the men’s, women’s and open divisions. Teams in other divisions that advanced to the U.S. Open through one of the Official US Open Qualifier Tournaments will have their entry fees paid by Paul Mitchell.
Entry to the U.S. Open of Beach Volleyball, presented by Corona Extra, is still open for all divisions. Entry fees are $60 per team for all men’s women’s and co-ed divisions, other than the Open Divisions. Open Divisions entry are $100 per team. Late registration is available on site, beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 26 for the Open division qualifiers, limited to the first 32 teams that sign up. Registration also is available on site on Saturday, Sept. 27 for all amateur divisions, based on open spots available in any of the amateur draws. There is an additional $10 per person charge for on-site registration.
In addition to Corona Extra, other sponsors of this year’s US Open of Beach Volleyball are Oakley, Spalding, Paul Mitchell and Jones Trading, who will sponsor the Masters Divisions.
