Junior Beach Teams Bow Out of World Championships

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sept. 7, 2008) – Two U.S. junior beach volleyball teams fell in the first round of single-elimination play at the SWATCH FIVB Under-21 World Championships on Saturday in Brighton, England.

Jeremy Casebeer (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Andy McGuire (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), seeded seventh, lost to the fifth-seeded tandem of Christiaan Varenhorst and Alexander Brouwer from the Netherlands, 13-21, 18-21, in 35 minutes on Saturday.

Varenhorst and Brouwer advanced to Sunday's gold medal match, where they lost to Italy’s second-seeded Francesco Giontella and Paolo Nicolai, the defending world champions.

On the women’s side, 11th-ranked Jane Croson (Los Alamitos, Calif.) and Summer Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.) fell to Poland’s Monica Brzostek and Karolina Sowala, the tournament’s 18th seeds, 13-21, 12-21, in 32 minutes.

Brzostek and Sowala went on to win the bronze medal on Sunday. Marleen Van Iersel and Daniëlle Remmers of Netherlands won the gold medal.
