COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sept. 5, 2008) – After a successful day of competition, both remaining beach volleyball teams from the United States have advanced to the Round of 16 at the FIVB Under-21 World Championships, with single-elimination matches beginning on Saturday in Brighton, England.

Jeremy Casebeer (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Andy McGuire (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) rebounded after dropping their first match of pool play on Thursday to net two victories on Friday. Casebeer and McGuire defeated Great Britain’s Josh Randall and Adam Smith, 21-12, 21-6, in a match that took just 24 minutes. The duo rode that momentum into their third match where they battled another squad from Great Britain, Chris Gregory and Tristan Dampney. The Americans again made quick work of things, winning 21-11, 21-11, to advance to Saturday’s Round of 16.

Casebeer and McGuire, seeded seventh in the Main Draw, will meet the fifth-seeded tandem of Christiaan Varenhorst and Alexander Brouwer from the Netherlands with a trip to the quarterfinals on the line.

On the women’s side, Jane Croson (Los Alamitos, Calif.) and Summer Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.) were victorious in their lone match of the day, beating second-seeded Amanda Maltez and Natasha Paula Borges of Brazil, 21-16, 23-21. The win pushed the U.S. pair into the Round of 16 with a 2-1 pool play record.

Saturday’s match sees the 11th-seeded Croson and Ross tangling with Poland’s Monica Brzostek and Karolina Sowala, the tournament’s 18th seeds.

Round of 16 and quarterfinal matches will be played on Saturday with the tournament scheduled to conclude on Sunday. Complete results and more information can be found on the FIVB Web site at http://www.fivb.org/EN/BeachVolleyball/index.asp.
