COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Oct. 22, 2008) - USA Volleyball (USAV), the national governing body of  volleyball, convened its new Board of Directors for the first time under its revamped governance structure during a two-day session held Oct. 19-20 in Colorado Springs. The inaugural meeting of USAV's streamlined board (16 Directors versus the previous 30) covered significant governance issues relating to its bylaws, committee structure and personnel, planning and 2009 operational goals.

The Board set its strategic game plan to grow the sport based upon the unprecedented global success of the U.S. Men's and Women's National teams in both indoor disciplines (gold medal for men, silver medal for women) and beach discipline (gold for both men and women). David Schreff, an Independent Director and president of Bedare Sports and Entertainment who previously served as a senior executive with the National Basketball Association, Marvel Entertainment and Walt Disney Company, was selected by the Board to serve a four-year team as Chairman of the USA Volleyball Board of Directors. At-Large Director Kevin Twohig, general manager of the Spokane (Wash.) Arena and executive director of the Spokane Public Facilities District, was selected as Chairman Pro-Tem.

"I am fortunate to work with this dedicated board of directors and management team representing USA Volleyball," Schreff said. "We have an enormous amount of talent that can grow the game during the next quadrennial cycle leading up to the London Olympic Games in 2012."

"The transition to the new Board of Directors and our new governance structure will allow USA Volleyball to utilize significant additional expertise in areas where we have been challenged in the past and allow us to better meet our overriding objective to grow the game," USA Volleyball Chief Executive Officer Doug Beal said. "It was obvious during the meetings this past weekend that our new board members are passionate about the sport and committed to USA Volleyball. We will use the combined synergies of our Olympic success in all disciplines and the new board expertise to generate added involvement and growth at all levels from junior to adults playing indoor or beach volleyball."

In addition to the reduction in Board members, the USAV Executive Committee has been eliminated as well as a reduction to the three direct committees to the Board. The new Board will focus on big picture governing issues while empowering the national office staff to carry out the mission through feedback from various targeted Assemblies, Commissions and other advisory committees.

Schreff credited the USA Volleyball staff and past Board of Directors for the organization's recent Olympic success, positive financial status and great positioning for growth.

"I credit Doug Beal and the entire executive team, not only for leading our indoor and beach teams to unprecedented success in the Beijing Olympic Games, but working with the previous Board to put USA Volleyball in a stable financial growth position with respect to television, sponsorships, licensing and premier events opportunities. I see many parallels for the future growth of volleyball in the United States and the world that I have witnessed first-hand in other court sports such as basketball," Schreff said drawing upon his experiences marketing the 1992 and 1996 USA Basketball Dream Teams that transformed the NBA into a global brand.

Schreff, Adam Rymer and Steve Simpson fill the three Independent Director positions on the USA Volleyball Board of Directors as part of the new-look Board. Schreff's current company Bedare Sports and Entertainment develops licensable intellectual properties, patents and strategic alliances for the sports, television, film, publishing, fashion and music industries. Rymer works at Universal Pictures as the senior vice president of Digital Platforms. Simpson serves as senior vice president and general manager of Fox Sports Net West and Fox Sports Net Prime Ticket.

"USA Volleyball is most fortunate to attract world-class independent directors - Adam Rymer and Steve Simpson - to provide unique strategic guidance, particularly in the areas of digital rights management, television production, membership marketing and sponsorship/advertising," Schreff said. "The Board is now set to move ahead with management to leverage the best of the indoor and beach disciplines that attracted millions of new youth and adult fans during the recently concluded Olympic Games in Beijing."

The Board also has four members that were seated members of the past board of directors. At-Large Director Kevin Twohig served as USA Volleyball executive vice president as well as on USAV's Executive Committee. Ken Cain and Jon Lee, both elected by USAV's Regional Volleyball Associations to the new board of directors, were also previous members of the board. Tyra Turner continues to serve as a Beach Athlete Director.

The Board is set to meet again in January 2009 at a date and location to be determined, and will likely operate with three face-to-face sessions annually.
