USA Volleyball Announces Women's National Team Open Tryout Dates

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Nov. 19, 2008) - USA Volleyball will hold its annual open tryouts for the U.S. Women's National Team and Associated Training Programs Feb. 20-22, 2009, at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Click here for he tryout registration and application form, which must be returned by Jan. 12, 2009.

As part of the tryout, athletes will compete for spots on the USA Women's Volleyball National Team program, USA Women's World University Games Team or the USA Women's Senior A2 Teams. The Women's National Team program is open to athletes who have concluded their college eligibility and who wish to train full-time. This program could begin as early as February 2009, or when an athlete's scholastic or professional club season has concluded. Athletes who will have remaining collegiate eligibility may still participate in the program with participation beginning May 2009 or when their scholastic calendar ends.

Athletes in college with collegiate eligibility remaining for the 2009 season and not selected to the USA Women's National Team may be invited to participate in the USA Senior A2 Teams. This program is tentatively scheduled to take place in Minneapolis from May 18 through May 27. A projected 24 athletes will be invited to participate in the program, which will include training and competition in the 2009 USA Adult Open Championships in the Open Division from May 23-26. USA Volleyball considers the event as the National Championships for the sport of volleyball in the United States.

USA Volleyball is scheduled to compete in the 2009 World University Games held approximately June 30 through July 12 in Belgrade, Serbia. Selections for this team will be made by the U.S. National Team staff based on performances at tryouts, training with the A2 team and/or with the National Team. Athletes with U.S. citizenship and passport, at least 17-years old and less than 28 years of age on Jan. 1, 2009, and a current college/university student officially registered as proceeding towards a degree or diploma or a former student of a college/university who has obtained an academic degree or diploma in the 2008 calendar year are eligible for this program.

The open tryouts are open to current college-age athletes and older, as well as high school athletes born in 1989 or earlier. All tryout participants must be U.S. citizens and are required to provide proof of valid health insurance coverage upon their arrival at the tryout.

The registration fee for this tryout is $100 payable either by check or credit card. This fee includes costs for facilities, athletic trainers and tryout T-shirts. For an additional fee of $90, athletes can receive U.S. Olympic Training Center housing, meals and airport transportation. Space is limited for this offer and will be filled on a first-registered, first-paid basis. Total cost of tryout for athletes staying on complex at the U.S. Olympic Training Center is $190.

Per NCAA legislation (NCAA bylaw 16.8.1.3(c)) adopted 1/8/07 and effective 8/1/07, it is allowable for an institution, if it so chooses, to pay necessary expenses for its athlete(s) to attend a National Team tryout.

Athletes should plan to arrive in Colorado Springs by 4 p.m. on Feb. 20 and be prepared to remain in town until the completion of the tryout at 11 a.m. on Feb. 22.

Participating tryout athletes must possess a working knowledge of offensive/defensive systems and terminology consistent with that of a typical mid- to high-level collegiate program. Participating athletes must also possess a level of athleticism, fitness and technical ability consistent with that of a high-level collegiate player. Participants unable to meet these requirements will not be accepted for the tryout or may be removed from further tryout participation. No refunds will be offered for the latter case.
