COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Nov. 11, 2008) - Fresh off a gold medal performance at the SWATCH FIVB Beach World Tour event in Phuket, Thailand last week, Americans Jen Boss (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) are back in action in Sanya, China, as the FIVB World Tour makes its final stop of the season Nov. 11-16.
Boss and Ross were a perfect 6-0 in Thailand, including an 18-21, 21-14, 15-12 win over fellow Americans Nicole Branagh (Orinda, Calif.) and Tyra Turner (Fort Myers Beach, Fla.) in the final. The win was the first of the year on the FIVB Tour for Boss and Ross, as their previous best finish was a second-place showing in Dubai.
Branagh and Turner, who finished 5-2 overall in Thailand en route to a silver medal, will also play in China. While Thailand was the first FIVB competition for the two as partners, the pair is expected to be one of the top seeds in Sanya. Branagh has 11 top-10 finishes on the FIVB circuit this year, including a win in Barcelona with Elaine Youngs and a victory in Dubai with Kerri Walsh. Turner has compiled eight top-10 finishes on the year, including three runner-up spots on the podium.
The FIVB season continued to be kind to up-and-comers Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Ashley Ivy (Arlington, Texas), as the duo finished fifth in Phuket with a 4-2 record. In two World Tour events this season, Fendrick and Ivy have finished fifth (Thailand) and seventh (Dubai) while winning a pair of FIVB Satellite events in Egypt and Liechtenstein.
While those three pairs are safely in the main draw, the U.S. team of Stacy Rouwenhorst (Bellflower, Calif.) and Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.) will make their first FIVB appearance with a qualifying match scheduled for Wednesday. Rouwenhorst and Pavlik will tangle with China's Chunmei Huang and Jingxian Situ in the first round of qualification.
