- The U.S. beach volleyball team of Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers has advanced to Saturday's semifinals of the men's SWATCH FIVB World Tour event in Roseto degli Abruzzi, Italy.
Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.), the tournament's top seeds, have not lost a set in winning four matches to make it to the semifinals. The second-seeded Brazilian team of Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos of Brazil will play in the other semifinals. The teams must wait to find out their opponents. One of those opponents could be the U.S. team of Matt Fuerbringer (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Casey Jennings (Las Vegas, Nev.), seeded 20th, who upset their countrymen Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Fla.), 2-0 (21-15, 21-19) in the consolation round on Friday. Gibb and Rosenthal fell to the consolation round after losing to Emanuel and Ricardo, 2-1 (18-21, 21-17, 11-15), in the third round on Friday.
To get to the semifinals, Fuerbringer and Jennings will have to beat 11th-seeded Julius Brink and Christoph Dieckmann of Germany and then would have to get past fifth-seeded Reinder Nummerdor and Richard Schuil of the Netherlands. Along with Gibb and Rosenthal, the 17th-ranked U.S. team of Stein Metzger (Honolulu, Hawai'i) and Mark Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) also bowed out of the tournament on Friday when they lost to China's fourth-seeded Penggen Wu and Linyin Xu, 0-2 (15-21, 16-21) in consolation.
At the women's SWATCH FIVB event in Seoul, Korea all three U.S. teams remain alive in consolation, but have some difficult matches ahead of them. The second-ranked team of Nicole Branagh (Orinda, Calif.) and Elaine Youngs (El Toro, Calif.) defeated countrywomen Jen Boss (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.), 2-0 (21-10, 21-17) in the third round on Friday, but followed that up with a 1-2 (18-21, 21-15, 15-17) loss to Brazil's Shelda Bede and Ana Paula Connelly, seeded sixth. Branagh and Youngs can make it to the semifinals if they can win their Saturday consolation match, where they will face the winner of the consolation match between the U.S. team of Tyra Turner (Fort Meyers Beach, Fla.) and Rachel Wacholder (Laguna Beach, Calif.), seeded 13th, and eighth-seeded Tamsin Barnett and Natalie Cook of Australia. Boss and Ross, will play China's fourth-seeded Jia Tian and Jie Wang in another consolation match on Saturday. A victory would put them in a consolation match against top-seeded Juliana Felisberta Silva and Larissa Franca of Brazil.
