COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 27, 2008) - The U.S. beach volleyball team of Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal upset countrymen Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers on Thursday in the second round of the Adelaide Australia Open, the first event on the 2008 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour. Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.), seeded 18th, beat second-ranked Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.), 2-0 (24-22, 21-18) in 48 minutes.

In the first round, Gibb and Rosenthal defeated 15th-ranked Martin Laciga and Jan Schnider of Switzerland (17-21, 25-23, 15-12) and the U.S. team has now advanced to Friday's third round where it will face China's Penggen Wu and Linyin Xu, who are seeded seventh. Dalhausser and Rogers won their opening match Thursday over the 31st-seeded Ces brothers (Andy and Kevin) of France (21-18, 14-21, 15-13). They will move to the consolation bracket to play Renato "Geor" Gomes and Jorge "Gia" Terceiro from the country of Georgia on Friday. Geor and Gia are ranked 16th.

Joining Gibb and Rosenthal in the third round will be the hard-charging U.S. team of Matt Fuerbringer (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Casey Jennings (Las Vegas, Nev.), ranked 27th. Fuerbringer and Jennings, who already had to win a country-quota match and two qualifier matches, defeated Australia's sixth-seeded team of Andrew Schacht and Josh Slack (21-19, 21-18) in the first round on Thursday and then took a comeback victory over Spain's 22nd-ranked team of Pablo Herrera and Raul Mesa (9-21, 21-15, 15-10). Fuerbringer/Jennings will play Germany's Julius Brink and Christoph Dieckmann, ranked 14th, in Friday's third round.

The U.S. team of Stein Metzger (Honolulu, Hawai'i) and Mark Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.), seeded 28th, won its first-round contest on Thursday, but lost in the second round to Switzerland's Sascha Heyer and Patrick Heuscher (18-21, 22-20, 16-18), seeded 12th. Metzger/Williams will play Australia's Schacht and Slack in Friday's consolation round.

In the women's tournament, fourth-seeded Nicole Branagh (Orinda, Calif.) and Elaine Youngs (El Toro, Calif.) have advanced to the third round after relatively easy victories over 29th-seeded Galyna Osheyko and Svitlana Baburina of Ukraine (21-11, 21-16) and 13th-seeded Maria Clara Salgado Rufino and Carol Salgado of Brazil (21-14, 21-17). Branagh/Youngs will play fifth-seeded Talita Antunes and Renata Ribeiro of Brazil in Friday's third round.
