- The U.S. beach volleyball team of Matt Fuerbringer and Casey Jennings has advanced from the country quota matches and the first two rounds of qualifying on Tuesday at the Adelaide Australia Open, the first event on the 2008 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour.
Fuerbringer (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Jennings (Las Vegas, Nev.) dispatched Jeff Murrell (San Diego, Calif.) and Ivan Mercer (Antelope, Calif.) in the first country quota match (21-15, 21-10) and then defeated Nick Lucena (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Sean Scott (Kailua, Hawai'i) in the second (14-21, 23-21, 15-13). Fuerbringer/Jennings received a bye in the first round of qualifying and the beat Mexico's Aldo Miramontes and Juan Virgen in the second round (21-11, 21-16). But it's not over yet. Fuerbringer/Jennings will have to beat Netherland's Jochem de Gruijter and Gijs Ronnes in the third round of qualifying on Wednesday to make it into the main draw.

U.S. Teams Win Australian Championships: The U.S. men's beach volleyball team of Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and the women's team of Jen Boss (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) each won the Crocs Tour Australian Championship on March 22 in Glenelg, Adelaide, Australia. Each team won $4,500. The U.S. teams were in Australia to warm up for the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour opener on the same beach. Boss/Ross defeated their country women Tyra Turner (Fort Meyers Beach, Fla.) and Rachel Wacholder (Laguna Beach, Calif.) in the final (21-14, 21-16). Gibb/Rosenthal beat Austrian pair Clemens Doppler and Peter Gartmeyer in the men's final (21-17, 21-15). In the semifinal, Gibb/Rosenthal defeated the U.S. duo of Stein Metzger (Honolulu, Hawai'i) and Mark Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.), 24-22, 21-8. Metzger is playing with Williams in Australia while his usual partner, Mike Lambert, recovers from a minor injury. Metzger/Williams finished the tournament tied for third.

NORCECA Tournament Gets Media's Attention: According to NORCECA, more than 20,000 fans watched the Boca Chica Beach Volleyball Tournament, the first leg of the 2008 NORCECA Circuit, on March 20-23 in the Dominican Republic. Several selected matches from the tournament, including the men's and women's finals won by USA and Cuba respectively, were on national television in the Dominican Republic and telecast to the Tri-State area of the United States (New York, New Jersey and Connecticut). The U.S. beach volleyball team of Ed Ratledge (Fountain Valley, Calif.) and David Fischer (Santa Barbara, Calif.) won the men's tournament for the United States.
