COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 19, 2008) -
The U.S. Women's Sitting Volleyball Team has split its first two matches against the women's sitting team from Netherlands as the two groups tour the Chicago area.
The Netherlands defeated the United States 3-1 (25-21, 13-25, 25-19, 27-25) on Monday at the Great Lakes Center in Aurora, Ill. A large number of spectators viewed the match, which was hosted and supported by the Sports Performance Volleyball Club. On Tuesday, Team USA came back and beat Netherlands 3-1 (25-17, 25-22, 23-25, 25-8) at the Energy Volleyball Complex in Niles, Ill., which also provided support staff and services.
"This was perhaps their best match since the bronze-medal victory in Athens, Greece," U.S. Head Coach Mike Hulett (Des Plaines, Ill.) said of his team. "Team USA excelled in all areas of the game, making a remarkable turnaround from the first match, where they missed 21 serves and had 22 reception errors."
Team USA and the Netherlands are in the Chicago area to prepare for the Paralympic Games on Sept. 6-17 in Beijing. The U.S. Women are the defending Paralympic bronze medalists from 2004, when the Netherlands won silver. Both teams will also be playing at the first World Organization Volleyball for the Disabled (WOVD) Intercontinental Cup on April 22-30 in Cairo, Egypt. The teams are also playing in the Chicago area to raise awareness of sitting volleyball and the 22 other Paralympic sports. Among the U.S. players participating are Illinois residents Hope Lewellen (Palos Park) and Nichole Millage (Champaign). The public is welcome to attend practices and matches. All matches listed below will begin at 7 p.m. and admission is free. Autograph sessions will be held after each match.
