USA Junior Olympic Girls’ Volleyball Championships Crown 18s Division Winners

DALLAS, TEXAS (June 29, 2008) – The 29th USA Junior Olympic Girls’ Volleyball Championships, hosted by USA Volleyball at the Dallas Convention Center, crowned its first three champions on Sunday as the 10-day event runs from June 26 to July 5.

TCA-CA 18 3rd Degree BL outlasted Imi Ike 18s for the 18 Open Division championship with a 25-14, 25-16, 24-26, 29-31, 15-12 victory in the gold-medal match. TCA-CA 18 3rd Degree BL rallied from two sets down in the semifinals with a 23-25, 12-25, 25-23, 25-22, 15-13 victory over Vision 18 Gold to reach the finals. It defeated Invasion 18-Black 25-16, 25-15, 25-21 in the quarterfinals. Imi Ike 18s won two four-set matches to reach the finals with a 25-17, 18-25, 25-12, 25-17 win over Gold Bear 18 FF in the quarterfinals and 22-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-23 victory over SCVC 18 Nike in the semifinals. Both 18 Open finalists battled back from pool play losses to reach the gold-medal match.

A5 Mizuno 181 Bob captured the 18 National Division title with a 22-25, 25-20, 15-12 victory over Amarillo Elite 181 in the gold-medal match. A5 Mizuno 181 Bob advanced to the championship match with a 21-25, 25-21, 15-7 victory over South Shore 18 Mizuno in the quarterfinals and a 25-22, 25-20 victory over Laguna Beach 18 Kyle in the semifinals. The gold-medal team lost just once during the tournament, a two-set setback to CVA 18 National Navy in round two forcing it into a challenge match to reach the gold bracket. Amarillo Elite 181 advanced to the title match with a 25-23, 26-28, 25-10 quarterfinal victory over CVA National Navy, followed by a 25-17, 24-26, 16-14 victory over Tampa United 18.

Main Beach 18 Gold swept T-Atlantis Black Sheep 25-19, 25-18 in the 18 American Division championship match to win the bracket’s gold medal. Main Beach 18 Gold, which lost only one set the entire tournament, reached the final by sweeping Gold Cal 18-1Melanie 25-16, 25-22 in the quarterfinal round and NorCal 18-1 Black 25-15, 25-14 in the semifinals. T-Atlantis Black Sheep defeated Temecula 18 Vemma 25-15, 13-25, 15-13 in the quarterfinals and Texas Elite 18 Black 25-15, 25-22 in the semifinals to advance to the championship match.

Titles to be contested on Monday, June 30, are the National and American championships for 12- and 13-year olds.

This year’s USA Junior Olympic Girls’ Volleyball Championships includes 9,500 athletes from 788 teams. The tournament will crown 19 champions in age divisions ranging from 12-18. Open Division titles are disputed for the 14s, 15s, 16s, 17s and 18s, while National Division and Open Division contests championships for all seven age groups.

The 2008 USA Junior Olympic Girls’ Volleyball Championships is estimated to add $15.5 million to the Dallas economy. With an anticipated total attendance of 40,000 from participants, coaches and fans, the event has set record hotel bookings. The 10-day event will be at the Dallas Convention Center and the tournament will be played in the nation’s largest column-free exhibit hall. A total of 48 volleyball courts occupy one third of the Dallas Convention, the nation’s largest column-free exhibit hall.
