- The University of Central Oklahoma's Department of Disabled Sports and Events will host a series of matches between the U.S. Women's National Sitting Volleyball Team and the Netherlands on June 24-29, at the UCO's Wellness Center in Edmond, Okla. The match-up features the first visit to the United States by a foreign team to compete in sitting volleyball.
"With this first visit to America by a foreign national sitting team, it is fitting that the No. 1 ranked team in the world comes to see our great home base at UCO," said John Kessel, Director of Disabled Programs for USA Volleyball.
UCO recently became the host site for the U.S. Women's Sitting Team, hosting the first training camp on its campus in May 2007, while the men's team has been training at UCO since 2005.
The Dutch team is the current sitting volleyball world champion, having beaten China at the 2006 Sitting Volleyball World Championships in the Netherlands.
Women's sitting volleyball became a Paralympic sport in 2004, with the American team winning the Olympic bronze and the Netherlands taking the silver medal.
"UCO is thrilled to host this competition and invites the public to attend the matches and witness first-class volleyball competition," said UCO's Disabled Sports and Events Assistant Director, Katrina Shaklee.
There will be five matches between the two teams, running June 25-29. All matches are slated to begin at 3 p.m., except on the 27th with the match starting at 7 p.m. Admission is free and the public is encouraged to attend.
U.S. Paralympics is a division of the United States Olympic Committee. Formed in 2001 to increase support for Paralympic sport in the USA, Paralympics promotes Olympic ideals throughout the American population, especially among those Americans who have physical disabilities.Game Schedule:
