COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 20, 2008) - All eight U.S. beach volleyball teams that began competing at the US$600,000 Henkel Grand Chelem in Paris remained alive at the end of the day on Friday, the fifth day of the SWATCH FIVB World Tour Grand Slam event.
The U.S. women's teams of top-ranked Misty May-Treanor (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Kerri Walsh (Santa Clara, Calif.), fourth-seeded Nicole Branagh (Orinda, Calif.) and Elaine Youngs (El Toro, Calif.), seventh-seeded Jen Boss (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and 11th-ranked Tyra Turner (Fort Meyers Beach, Fla.) and Rachel Wacholder (Laguna Beach, Calif.) have all made it to Saturday's third round.
However, at least one U.S. team will be eliminated after the third round as May-Treanor and Walsh will play Boss and Ross. May-Treanor and Walsh are seeking their fourth-straight Paris medal after winning the titles in 2005 and 2007, and placing second in 2006.
Branagh and Youngs will face fifth-seeded Talita Antunes and Renata Ribeiro of Brazil on Saturday. Turner and Wacholder will take on 16th-seeded Sara Goller and Laura Ludwig of Germany.
Four U.S. men's teams have advanced to Saturday's second round of elimination play.
Top-ranked Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) swept their pool-play matches and advanced directly to the second round of elimination play where they will face 16th-seeded Mischa Urbatzka and Jonas Reckermann of Germany on Saturday. Twelfth-ranked Matt Fuerbringer (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Casey Jennings (Las Vegas, Nev.) will take on Latvia's Aleksandrs Samoilous and Martins Plavins, seeded 31st.
The eighth-seeded U.S. men's team of Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.) finished pool play 2-1 and had to beat China's 30th-ranked Jian Li and Shun Zhou (21-17, 21-13) in the first round of elimination play to advance. In the second round, Gibb and Rosenthal will face seventh-seeded Harley Marques and Pedro Salgado of Brazil.
Stein Metzger (Honolulu, Hawai'i) and Mark Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.), who had to play in the qualifier to advance to the main draw and are ranked 18th, also had to play in the first round, where they defeated Spain's 20th-seeded Inocencio Lario Carrillo and Adrián Gavira Collado (20-22, 21-17, 16-14).
Metzger and Williams will play 24th-seeded Renato "Geor" Gomes and Jorge "Gia" Terceiro of Georgia in the next round.
The tournament will conclude with the men's and women's medal matches on Sunday.
