U.S. Women's Beach Teams Still Alive in Poland
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 5, 2008) - The U.S. women's beach volleyball team of Tyra Turner and Rachel Wacholder have reached the fourth round of the SWATCH FIVB World Tour event in Stare Jablonki , Poland, while their compatriots, Jen Boss and April Ross, remain alive in the consolation bracket.
Both teams are chasing Nicole Branagh (Orinda, Calif.) and partner Elaine Youngs (El Toro, Calif.) for the second U.S. berth at the 2008 Olympic Games. Branagh and Youngs are playing at the AVP tournament in Hermosa Beach, Calif., this weekend, as are the U.S. No. 1 team of Misty May-Treanor (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Kerri Walsh (Santa Clara, Calif.)
As the sixth-ranked team, Turner (Fort Meyers Beach, Fla.) and Wacholder (Laguna Beach, Calif.) have not had to play a higher ranked team in the first three rounds. That will change Friday when they will play Brazil's second-seeded Shelda Bede and Ana Paula Connelly, who are locked in their own battle to get to Beijing with at least three other Brazilian teams.
Boss (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.), seeded fifth, were upset in the first round on Wednesday by Italy's 28th-ranked Daniela Gioria and Giulia Momoli, 1-2 (20-22, 21-14, 13-15). The pair came back Thursday to win three straight matches, including an upset of the third-ranked German team of Sara Goller and Laura Ludwig, 2-0 (21-14, 21-16).
They will play Norway's 24th-seeded Kathrine Maaseide and Susanne Glesnes in their first match on Friday.
