Miami to Host NORCECA Boys Youth Championship

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 17, 2008) – USA Volleyball will host top boys’ volleyball teams from North and Central American and the Caribbean at the 2008 NORCECA Boys’ Youth Continental Championship on Aug. 3-8 at Florida International University’s Pharmed Arena  in Miami. 

Eight boys’ youth national teams (players born in 1991 or ’92) from Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the United States will be competing to qualify for the 2009 FIVB Boys’ Youth World Championship, tentatively scheduled for Aug. 19-30 in Italy.

Puerto Rico is the defending NORCECA Boys’ Youth champion while the United States won the silver medal in 2006. The United States also won the silver medal in 2004.

Pool play competition will run from Aug. 3-5.  Playoffs will begin on Aug. 6 with a champion being crowned on Aug. 8, 2008.  Event day tickets and tournament passes can be purchased at the door.

The 2008 U.S. Boys’ Youth Team will be coached by Long Beach State men’s assistant coach Andy Read with assistance from John Hawks, assistant men’s coach at USC, and Sean Byron, assistant men’s coach at Ohio State.

The 2008 U.S. Boys’ Youth National Training Team is practicing at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., on July 14-28. The team will be cut to a final squad of 12 athletes, who will participate in the NORCECA tournament.

Ticket Information:  Adults $10, students, children (under 12), seniors (55+), military and groups (12 or more) $5, which will provide entry for all matches for that specific day.  All Tournament Passes will be available for $40 and provide entry into all matches for the six days of competition.  Tickets will only be available at the door.
