USA Junior Olympic Boys’ Volleyball Championships Crown 14 Open and Club Winners

SANDY, Utah (July 8, 2008) - The USA Junior Olympic Boys’ Volleyball Championships, hosted by USA Volleyball at the South Towne Exposition Center in Sandy, Utah, crowned its 14 Open and 14 Club age division winners on Tuesday as the eight-day event runs from July 2 to July 9.

Pitirres 14 Under (San Juan, Puerto Rico) defeated Torrimar 14 (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) 25-17, 19-25, 15-11 in the gold-medal match of the 14 Open Division. Pitirres 14 Under, which went undefeated in the tournament with three set losses in 11 matches, downed Balboa 14 Quiksilver (Costa Mesa, Calif.) 25-12, 25-22 in the semifinal match to advance to the title contest. Torrimar 14, which lost only in the gold-medal match, advanced to the championship match by defeating SCVC 14 QS (Redondo Beach, Calif.) 25-23, 27-25 in the semifinals.

Naranjito_ENVOL 14 (Naranjito, Puerto Rico) edged Borinquen Coqui 14-1 (San Juan, Puerto Rico) in the 14 Club Division championship match. Naranjito_ENVOL 14, which won all 11 of its matches in the tournament with only one set loss, advanced to the gold-medal match by defeating Vaqueros 14M (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) 25-10, 25-23 in the semifinals. Borinquen Coqui 14-1 topped Bay to Bay 14 Nike (Scotts Valley, Calif.) 25-10, 25-16 to reach the championship match.

The USA Junior Olympic Boys’ Volleyball Championships, which concludes tomorrow with the 17 Open and 17 Club championships, will crown five Open Division titles at each age group between 14 and 18. In addition, seven Club Division titles will be contested in the 12-year-old category through under-18.
