USA Junior Olympic Boys’ Volleyball Championships Crown Three Division Winners

SANDY, Utah (July 5, 2008) - The USA Junior Olympic Boys’ Volleyball Championships, hosted by USA Volleyball at the South Towne Exposition Center in Sandy, Utah, crowned its 18 Open, 18 Club and 13 Club age division winners on Saturday as the eight-day event runs from July 2 to July 9.

Balboa 18 Quiksilver (Costa Mesa, Calif.) defeated Epic 18-Darrell (Poway, Calif.) 25-14, 25-15 in the 18 Open Division championship match to claim gold medals. Balboa 18 Quiksilver, which went undefeated in the tournament, topped Seaside 18-Black (San Diego, Calif.) 25-16, 19-25, 15-11 in the quarterfinals and Balboa 18 White (Costa Mesa, Calif.) 25-16, 25-14 in the semifinals. Epic 18-Darrell advanced to the championship match with a 25-18, 15-25, 16-14 win over Santa Barbara 18s-1 (Santa Barbara, Calif.) in the quarterfinals and a 22-25, 25-23, 16-14 semifinal win over Ultimate VC B18 Gold (Frankfort, Ill.).

Vegas Aces 18s (Las Vegas, Nev.) defeated Fresno 18s Red (Fresno, Calif.) 25-15, 32-34, 15-4 in the 18 Club Division championship match to earn the gold medals. Vegas Aces 18s reached the title match with a 25-17, 25-17 victory over SMBC 18 Silver (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) in the semifinals and an 18-25, 25-23, 16-14 win over Molten 18 Black (Gilbert, Ariz.) in the quarterfinals. Fresno 18s Red defeated Complex Sports/PVC 18 (Rescue, Calif.) 25-20, 25-16 in the quarterfinals and Elite West BAM (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) 25-15, 20-25, 18-16 in the semifinals to reach the championship match.

Pitirres 13 Under (San Juan, Puerto Rico) defeated Highline 13Black (Long Beach, Calif.) 25-16, 25-20 in the 13 Club Division gold medal match. Pitirres 13 Under, which lost only one of 11 matches in the tournament, received a bye into the quarterfinals and defeated Borinquen Coqui 13-1 (San Juan, Puerto Rico) in the semifinals. Highline 13Black defeated Torrimar 13 (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico 25-21, 21-25, 15-10 in the semifinals and Gigantes Carolina-13 (Carolina, Puerto Rico) in the quarterfinals. Teams from Puerto Rico filled five of the top six spots in the final 13 Club standings.

The USA Junior Olympic Boys’ Volleyball Championships will crown five Open Division titles at each age group between 14 and 18. In addition, seven Club Division titles will be contested in the 12-year-old category through under-18.

The 16 Open and 16 Club brackets will take center stage on Sunday with its championship matches. The 15 Open and 15 Club gold-medal matches will take place on July 7, followed by the 14 Open and 14 Club titles on July 8. The tournament concludes on July 9 with the 17 Open and 17 Club championships.
