COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 4, 2008) – The U.S. men’s teams sailed while the U.S. women’s teams sank on Friday at the World University Championship for beach volleyball in a soggy Hamburg, Germany.

As rain poured down and temperatures dropped, the team of Joey Dykstra (Hermosa Beach, Calif./USC) and Mark Van Zwieten (Pompano Beach, Fla./Florida Atlantic), ranked third, and the team of Clint Coe (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach State) and Duncan Budinger (Encinitas, Calif./Long Beach State), seeded 23rd, both won all their matches and advanced to Saturday’s fourth round, where they must face each other.

Dykstra and Van Zwieten opened play on Friday be beating 20th-seeded Constantin Quadt (20) and Alexei Prawdzic of Switzerland, 24-22, 17-21, 15-8, in the second round. They followed that up with a victory over fourth-ranked Sebastian Dollinger and Florian Lüdike of Germany, 21-18, 14-21, 15-12.

“This is the same team that knocked Stein Metzger and Mark Williams out of the qualifier in Berlin a few weeks ago and has been in a couple of FIVB main draws,” wrote U.S. team leader Ali Wood from Germany. “Dollinger is 6-9 and created a whole new challenge for Joey’s block. Kazmarek has a wicked left hand and a great jumper.”

Coe and Budinger beat out the 10th-ranked Chinese team of Gong and Zhou, 21-16, 21-17 in the second round and then defeated the 16th-seeded Chinese team of Pan and Zhang, 27-25, 19-21, 17-15.

The team that loses Saturday’s fourth-round match will drop to the consolation bracket and still have a shot to make it to the semifinals.

On the women’s side, Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif./UCLA) and Keegan Featherstone (Manhattan Beach, Calif./UC Irvine), ranked fifth, started out Friday with a second-round loss to New Zealand’s 19th-seeded Anna Scarlett and Susan Blundell, 21-14, 18-21, 20-22. Fendrick and Featherstone won their first consolation match against 26th-ranked Tse Wing Hung and Kong Cheuk Yee of Hong Kong, 21-18, 20-22, 15-8. But they were knocked out of the tournament by France’s fourth-seeded Laura Longuet and Celine Gemise Fareau, 21-9, 21-14. Their final ranking will be 13th.

Finally, Olivia Waldowski (Irvine, Calif./UC Santa Barbara) and Kari Pestolesi (Huntington Beach, Calif./UC Irvine), ranked 23rd, who were already in the consolation bracket after a first-round loss Thursday, defeated Spain’s Hopf Aguilar sisters, ranked 18th, 21-17, 21-15 in their first match on Saturday, but then fell to Austria’s Jill Jasbar and Conny Rimser, seeded 17th, 12-21, 21-18, 10-15. Their final ranking will be 17th.
