Dykstra, Van Zwieten to Play for World University Championship Bronze

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 5, 2008) – The U.S. men’s team of Joey Dykstra (Hermosa Beach, Calif./USC) and Mark Van Zwieten (Pompano Beach, Fla./Florida Atlantic) will play for a bronze medal on Sunday at the World University Championship for beach volleyball in Hamburg, Germany.
Dykstra and Van Zwieten, ranked third, will face the Czech Republic team of Milan Monik and Filip Habr, ranked 22nd in the third-place match.
Dykstra and Van Zwieten opened the day on Saturday by defeating compatriots Clint Coe (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach State) and Duncan Budinger (Encinitas, Calif./Long Beach State), seeded 23rd, in a 50-minute battle, 12-21, 22-20, 15-9.
However, Dykstra and Van Zwieten suffered their first loss of the tournament in the semifinals as they fell to Ukraine’s Andriy Kutsmus and Oleksiy Klyamar, ranked 27th, 17-21, 18-21.
Coe and Budinger will finish the tournament in fifth place after losing to Spain’s Jose Manuel Ariza Molina and De Amo Fernandez Echeverria, 17-21, 21-15, 15-10 in 58 minutes in the consolation bracket. Molina and Echeverria will play for the gold medal against Kutsmus and Klyamar on Sunday.
The two U.S. women’s teams were eliminated from the tournament on Friday. Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif./UCLA) and Keegan Featherstone (Manhattan Beach, Calif./UC Irvine) finished 13th and Olivia Waldowski (Irvine, Calif./UC Santa Barbara) and Kari Pestolesi (Huntington Beach, Calif./UC Irvine) placed 17th.
