USA Junior Olympic Girls’ Volleyball Championships Crown 16s Division Winners

DALLAS, TEXAS (July 4, 2008) – The 29th USA Junior Olympic Girls’ Volleyball Championships, hosted by USA Volleyball at the Dallas Convention Center, crowned Open, National and American Division winners for the 16-year-old brackets on Friday as the 10-day event runs from June 26 to July 5.

Wave 16Jeanne Spalding (Encinitas, Calif.) earned the 16 Open Division gold medal by defeating Mizuno Long Beach (Redondo Beach, Calif.) 25-21, 25-20, 25-13 in the championship match. Both teams reached the title match without a loss in the tournament. Wave 16Jeanne Spalding topped Cal Jrs 16M 28-30, 25-22, 25-20, 25-20 in the semifinals and Sunshine 16 Sunshine 26-24, 25-17, 25-21 in the quarterfinals. Mizuno Long Beach 16M defeated Northern Lights 16-1 25-13, 25-23, 27-29, 18-25, 15-13 in the semifinals and Asics MAVS 16-1 25-18, 25-17, 25-15 in the quarterfinals.

NorCal 16-1 Black (Pleasanton, Calif.) defeated Cincy Classics 16 Red (Liberty Township, Ohio) to win the 16 National Division gold medal with a 25-20, 18-25, 15-11 victory in the title match. NorCal 16-Black, which dropped only a first-round pool match to Ozark Juniors 161, defeated St. Louis CYC 16 Green (St. Louis, Mo.) 25-22, 25-11 in the quarterfinals and Mizuno M1 161 (Minnetonka, Minn.) 25-21, 25-22 in the quarterfinals. Cincy Classics 16 Red topped Imi Ike Aven (Honolulu, Hawai’i) 26-24, 16-25, 17-15 in the quarterfinals before handing Nike Six Pack 16 (Cedar Falls, Iowa) a 25-20, 21-25, 15-11 loss in the semifinals.

TAV 16 Molten (Fort Worth, Texas) captured the 16 American Division title with a 25-19, 25-18 victory over Santa Barbara 16-Elite (Santa Barbara, Calif.) in a battle of undefeated teams. TAV 16 Molten, which lost just two sets the entire tournament, reached the gold-medal match with a 23-25, 25-23, 15-7 victory over IPFA 16s (Ankeny, Iowa) in semifinals and a 25-12, 25-16 win over CVC 16 Black (Fairview Park, Ohio) in the quarterfinals. Santa Barbara 16-Elite defeated East Carolina JVC (Greenville, N.C.) 25- 16, 25-19 in the semifinals and Coast 16Mizuno Kirby (San Diego, Calif.) 17-25, 25-19, 15-10 in the quarterfinals.

The USA Junior Olympic Girls’ Volleyball Championships conclude on July 5 withtThe 14 Open, 14 National and 14 American championship title being determined.

This year’s USA Junior Olympic Girls’ Volleyball Championships includes 9,500 athletes from 788 teams. The tournament will crown 19 champions in age divisions ranging from 12-18. Open Division titles are disputed for the 14s, 15s, 16s, 17s and 18s, while National Division and Open Division contests championships for all seven age groups.

The USA Junior Olympic Girls’ Volleyball Championships is estimated to add $15.5 million to the Dallas economy. With an anticipated total attendance of 40,000 from participants, coaches and fans, the event has set record hotel bookings. The 10-day event will be at the Dallas Convention Center and the tournament will be played in the nation’s largest column-free exhibit hall. A total of 48 volleyball courts occupy one third of the Dallas Convention, the nation’s largest column-free exhibit hall.
