COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 3, 2008) – The beach in Hamburg was hot but so were the four U.S. teams went competing Thursday at the Fourth World University Championship for beach volleyball in Germany.

All four U.S. teams endured heat in the low 90s as they completed pool play and moved on to the double-elimination tournament.

Joey Dykstra (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and Mark Van Zwieten (Pompano Beach, Fla.), ranked third, defeated a team from Turkey in their final pool play match and defeated the 15th-ranked team from Netherlands in round 1. They will play a 20th-seeded team from Switzerland in Friday’s second round.

Clint Coe (Long Beach, Calif.) and Duncan Budinger (Encinitas, Calif.), seeded 23rd, upset the 10th-ranked Chinese team in their final pool-play match, then beat Australia in the first round. They will face the same Chinese team they played in pool play in the second round.

On the women’s side, Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Keegan Featherstone (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), ranked fifth, fell to a 24th-ranked Canadian team in their final pool play match on Thursday. Nevertheless, they got a bye into the second round where they will face a tough, 19th-ranked New Zealand team that gave them a tough match in pool play.

Olivia Waldowski (Irvine, Calif.) and Kari Pestolesi (Huntington Beach, Calif.), ranked 23rd, lost their final pool play match to a sixth-seeded duo from Estonia. They lost again in the first round to the 24th-seeded team from Canada and fell to the consolation bracket where they will play an 18th-ranked team from Spain on Friday.
