USA Junior Olympic Girls’ Volleyball Championships Crown 15s Division Winners

DALLAS, TEXAS (July 3, 2008) – The 29th USA Junior Olympic Girls’ Volleyball Championships, hosted by USA Volleyball at the Dallas Convention Center, crowned Open, National and American Division winners for the 15-year-old brackets on Thursday as the 10-day event runs from June 26 to July 5.

Laguna Beach 15 Wizard (Laguna Nigel, Calif.) topped Wave 15Katie Spalding (Encinitas, Calif.) 25-20, 20-25, 15-11 to win the 15 Open Division title. Laguna Beach 15 Wizard defeated A5 Mizuno 151 Heidi 25-23, 25-16 in the quarterfinals and Santa Barbara 15-Elite (Santa Barbara, Calif.) 23-25, 25-20, 15-13 in the semifinals. Wave 15Katie Spalding topped City Beach 15 Black 25-20, 22-25, 15-13 in the quarterfinals and TAV 15 Asics (Fort Worth, Texas) 25-11, 25-23 in the semifinals. Mizuno Long Beach 15M (Redondo Beach, Calif.) defeated both 15 Open Division championship match teams, but lost in the quarterfinals to Santa Barbara 15-Elite.

The Iowa Rockets (Iowa City, Iowa) captured the 15 National Division title with a 24-26, 25-17, 15-11 victory over GI Power (Grand Island, Neb.) in the championship match. The Iowa Rockets, which rebounded from two opening pool play losses, reached the gold-medal match with a 25-15, 25-13 victory over Alamo 15 Kaepa (San Antonio, Texas) in the quarterfinals and a 25-20, 25-23 win over Niagara Frontier 15N (West Seneca, N.Y.) in the semifinals. GI Power, undefeated until the championship match, took a 25-17, 25-20 victory over Team Atlantis 15 Elite (Sidney, Ohio) in the semifinals and a 25-23, 25-23 win over Arizona Juniors 15-1 (Tempe, Ariz.) in the quarterfinals.

Champions 15U Elite (Orlando, Fla.) pocketed the gold medal with an undefeated record in the 15 American Division by claiming a 25-23, 25-14 victory over Laguna Beach 15 Daze (Laguna Nigel, Calif.) in the championship match. Champions 15U Elite reached the title match by sweeping SF Juniors 15 RoShamBo (San Francisco, Calif.) 26-14, 25-18 in the quarterfinals and edging TRV - 15 Elite (Houston, Texas) 24-26, 25-22, 15-9 in the semifinals. Laguna Beach 15 Daze defeated WVBA Mizuno 15 (Woodinville, Wash.) 19-25, 25-23, 16-14 in the quarterfinals and KC Extreme 15 Black (Lee’s Summit, Mo.) 18-25, 25-19, 15-9 in the semifinals.

The 16 Open, 16 National and 16 American will hold championship matches on Friday, July 4. The 14 Open, 14 National and 14 American championships conclude the tournament on Saturday, July 5.

This year’s USA Junior Olympic Girls’ Volleyball Championships includes 9,500 athletes from 788 teams. The tournament will crown 19 champions in age divisions ranging from 12-18. Open Division titles are disputed for the 14s, 15s, 16s, 17s and 18s, while National Division and Open Division contests championships for all seven age groups.

The USA Junior Olympic Girls’ Volleyball Championships is estimated to add $15.5 million to the Dallas economy. With an anticipated total attendance of 40,000 from participants, coaches and fans, the event has set record hotel bookings. The 10-day event will be at the Dallas Convention Center and the tournament will be played in the nation’s largest column-free exhibit hall. A total of 48 volleyball courts occupy one third of the Dallas Convention, the nation’s largest column-free exhibit hall.
