COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Dec. 29, 2008) - USA Volleyball was recognized by Universal Sports with two year-end top performance awards, according to the Universal Sports Web site.
Misty May-Treanor (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Kerri Walsh (Saratoga, Calif.) earned Universal Sports' Top Female Performance by a team. The duo won its second consecutive Olympic Games Beach Volleyball gold medal with its championship in Beijing.
"The 112-match winning streak compiled by Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh is remarkable," Universal Sports wrote in its Web release announcing the selection. "But for beach volleyball's dynamic duo, that string of dominance was the byproduct of their singular focus of becoming the first team to repeat as Olympic gold medalist, a feat they accomplished in Beijing to cement their status as the sport's greatest partnership ever."

The U.S. Men's Team was recognized with Universal Sports' Most Inspirational Performance for the 2008 season. Team USA captured the 2008 Olympic Games gold medal without a single match loss, all while enduring a tragedy within the team.
"The U.S. men's volleyball team's victory over Brazil in Beijing marked its first Olympic gold medal since 1988, and the team's first medal since 1992," Universal Sports wrote in its online press release. "But what made it inspirational was the way in which the U.S. men proudly played for themselves, for their country, but most importantly, how they played to ease the pain of a senseless act of violence which claimed the life of head coach Hugh McCutcheon's father-in-law just one day into the Games."
