COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Dec. 9, 2008) - USA Volleyball will have a major presence at the 2008 American Volleyball Coaches Association Annual Convention held Dec. 17-21 at Omaha, Neb. Members of both U.S. Olympic Indoor teams' coaching staffs will make presentations, while several Olympians and USAV staff will be present.
U.S. Olympic Men's Indoor Team Head Coach Hugh McCutcheon, who led Team USA to the 2008 Olympic Games gold medal, and Sue Woodstra, assistant coach for the U.S. Olympic Women's Indoor Team that won the silver medal at the 2008 Olympic Games, will lead the Pre-Convention Seminar on Dec. 17 starting at 9 a.m. Both coaches will analyze the 2008 Olympic Games and provide insights into volleyball playing trends. McCutcheon's presentation will be 9 a.m. to noon CT, while Woodstra follows at 1:30-4:30 p.m. CT. The two sessions will take place in Qwest Center Convention Center Rooms (QCCC) 213-214.
Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.), who earned a 2008 Olympic Games gold medal in beach volleyball with Phil Dalhausser, will present two topics at two different times. He will present "Beach Volleyball Tactics and Strategy" on Dec. 19 at 1 p.m. CT. and on Dec. 20 at 8:30 a.m. CT. Rogers' second topic, "Understanding the Differences Between the Beach and Indoor Game," is slated for Dec. 19 at 2:15 p.m. CT and Dec. 20 at 9:45 a.m. CT. All four sessions will be on the AVP Sand Court location.
In addition, Lindsey Berg (Honolulu) and Stacy Sykora (Burleson, Texas), silver medalists on the 2008 U.S. Olympic Women's Indoor Team, will be available to sign autographs and speak informally at various times in the USA Volleyball booth during the Volleyball Marketplace, also known as the AVCA Exhibit Show. The Volleyball Marketplace hours are Dec. 18 from 1:30-5 p.m. CT, Dec. 19 from noon-4:40 p.m. CT and 7:30-10 p.m. CT; and Dec. 20 from 8:30 a.m. until noon CT. In addition, Rogers will be available for autographs at the AVCA Annual Convention.
USA Volleyball commemorative apparel and replica jerseys will be available for purchase at the USAV exhibit booth. An online purchasing kiosk will be available for apparel, as well as the limited supply on site.
Ali Wood Lamberson, USA Volleyball director of Beach Programs, is scheduled to present "Using Sand Doubles Drills to Maximize Ball Contacts and Improve the All-Around Game" on Dec. 18 at 2 p.m. CT on the AVP Sand Court. Danalee Bragado-Corso, manager of USA Volleyball's High Performance Beach Program and head coach for its youth and junior beach programs, will discuss "Beach Volleyball Defensive Strategies and Footwork" on Dec. 18 at 3:15 p.m. CT on the AVP Sand Court.
Karch Kiraly, a member of the USA Volleyball Board of Directors, will present "Plyometric Training for Improved Performance" with Mike Rangel at on Dec. 19 at 3:30 p.m. CT on the AVP Sand Court
The USA Volleyball Coaching Accreditation Program (CAP) cadre is scheduled to make five presentations during the AVCA Annual Convention, while other AVCA sessions will be available as modules for certification. Bill Neville will present "Offensive Organizational Considerations: Which Comes First...The Chicken or the Egg" on Dec. 18 at 8 a.m. CT in QCCC Rooms 215-216. He and Bill Hamiter will team together to present "Stop Running in Circles! Play Games to Warm Up" on Dec. 18 at 2 p.m. on Court 2. Tom Tait will present "Motor Learning: Applying the Science to the Art of Coaching" on Dec. 19 at 2:15 p.m. CT in QCCC Rooms 213-214. Stu Sherman will discuss "Competitive Alternative Scoring Games" on Dec. 19 at 3:30 p.m. CT on Court 1. Cecile Reynaud will present "Defending the Slide Attack" on Dec. 20 at 8:30 a.m. CT on Court 2. Don Burroughs will speak on "Developing Your Functional Coaching Philosophy" on Dec. 20 at 3:30 p.m. CT. Additional sessions for CAP students only will be taught by these cadre and other instructors.
