BEIJING (Aug. 12, 2008) – The U.S. beach volleyball team of Misty May-Treanor (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Kerri Walsh (Orinda, Calif.) continued their march through pool play at the 2008 Olympic Games on Tuesday with a 21-15, 21-16 defeat of Cuba’s Dalixia Fernandez Grasset and Tamara Larrea Peraza at the Chaoyang Park Beach Volleyball Ground.

With their 103rd-straight match victory, the second-seeded May-Treanor and Walsh improve their pool record to 2-0 and secured a spot in the Round of 16, which begins Friday, Aug. 15. May-Treanor and Walsh will play Norway’s 11th-seeded Ingrid Tørlen and Nila Håkedal on Thursday, Aug. 14.

The defending Olympic gold medalists have seen an improvement in the competition since Athens.

“The entire world has improved two-fold since Athens,” Walsh said. “The bar has been set higher and we are hopefully the ones setting the bar.”

Perhaps in an effort to raise the bar, the 5-foot-9 May-Treanor proved to be the dominant offensive force on Tuesday as she tallied 21 kills on 28 attempts for a 75 percent rate of success. Walsh, who is 6-3, had eight kills and the only four stuff blocks in the match.

May-Treanor was credited with four digs and Walsh had two.

May-Treanor and Walsh held a 4-3 lead in the first set when Walsh took the serve on a May-Treanor kill and didn’t give it back until the lead was 9-3 and Larrea scored with a kill. Cuba never recovered.

In the second set, the score was tied at 4-4 when May-Treanor and Walsh each scored on a kill to go up by two points.

With the U.S. team leading 11-8, Larrea got a kill off a tip followed by a Fernandez ace to pull the Cubans to within one point. Following a timeout, May-Treanor responded with another kill to give Walsh the serve. Walsh then scored on a block and an ace to put May-Treanor and Walsh ahead 14-10. Cuba never threatened again.
