BEIJING (Aug. 11, 2008) - On behalf of the staff and leadership of USA Volleyball, I would like to extend my deepest appreciation to all those who have reached out to our extended USA Volleyball family, and specifically to Hugh and Elisabeth “Wiz” McCutcheon and their families, over the past three days as we have dealt with the tragic events in Beijing.

We have received hundreds of e-mails from all over the world expressing condolences and support. We want people to know that we are reading every one of them and that we will forward them to Hugh and Wiz when it is appropriate. After communicating with Hugh and Wiz, we agree that it is best for them to be able to focus completely on the well-being of Wiz’s mother, Barbara Bachman, and their family time together. As you may have read, Barbara’s condition has been upgraded from critical to serious but stable, which is good news.

We also want to extend publicly our condolences to the Bachman and McCutcheon families on the loss of Wiz’s father, Todd Bachman. Barbara and Todd have both been great supporters of USA Volleyball and have attended many matches in support of both their daughter and son-in-law. Todd’s loss is devastating to all of us and our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected by it.

Meanwhile, USA Volleyball is doing everything it can to support our men’s and women’s indoor and beach teams as they continue to compete at the 2008 Olympic Games. No matter what the results, we are incredibly proud of these young men and women who are representing the United States and USA Volleyball with pride, grace and enthusiasm.

Doug Beal, CEO of USA Volleyball
