BEIJING, China (Aug. 8, 2008) – The U.S. Beach Volleyball teams will begin Olympic competition with two matches on Saturday at the Olympic beach volleyball venue in Chaoyang Park.
The fifth-ranked U.S. women’s team of Nicole Branagh (Orinda, Calif.) and Elaine Youngs (El Toro, Calif.) will face Netherland’s 20th-seeded Rebekka Kadijk and Merel Mooren at 6 p.m.
The second-ranked U.S. men’s team of Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) will play at 9 p.m. against Latvia’s 23rd-seeded Martins Plavins and Aleksandrs Samoilovs.
Branagh and Youngs secured qualification for Beijing at the SWATCH FIVB World Tour event in Moscow when they won the silver medal and gained enough points to outpace countrywomen Jen Boss and April Ross.
Dalhausser and Rogers are the 2007 world champions and have won the last three international tournaments they played. However, in the final AVP event in Long Beach, Calif., before the Summer Games, they were beaten in the final by Olympic teammates Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.).
