U.S. Boys’ Youth Pair Settles for World Beach Championship Silver

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 3, 2008) – Tony Ciarelli (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Jeff Carlson (Newport Beach, Calif.) reached the SWATCH FIVB Youth World Championships title match at The Hague, Netherlands, but settled for the silver medal of the event presented by RICOH for players under the age of 19.

Ciarelli and Carlson, seeded 19th, lost to Estonia’s Kristo Kollo and Oliver Venno 21-17, 21-16 in the championship match. The gold medalists finished the tournament with a 7-0 record.

The American duo, which just started playing together just a month ago and both will be enrolled as freshman this fall at University of Southern California, ended the tournament with an 8-2 record with its only other loss to the U.S. pair of Maddison McKibben (Honolulu) and Will Montgomery (Santa Barbara, Calif.) during pool play of the main draw.

Estonia started the opening set with a 7-2 lead with five unanswered points. The Americans closed to within one at 10-9 on a 7-3 spurt, then stayed close at 18-16 before Estonia closed out the set with three of the last four points.

The second set witnessed seven ties by the time the scoreboard reached 8-8. Estonia built a quick three-point cushion after that point, which stretched to four points at 17-13. Estonia scored the final two points of the match after Ciarelli and Carlson cut the gap to 19-16.

The 2008 SWATCH FIVB Youth World Championships, presented by RICOH and in its seventh year, comprises a field of for players under the age of 19.
