MIAMI, Fla. (August 3, 2008) – Dylan Davis (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) scored 10 points to lead the 2008 U.S. Boys’ Youth National Team to a 25-16, 25-15, 25-16 win over Guatemala in the preliminary round of the NORCECA Boys Youth Continental Championship in Miami, Fla., on Sunday evening.

With the victory, the U.S. takes the early 1-0 advantage in pool play, while Guatemala drops to 0-1. El Salvador, the remaining member of pool A, opens NORCECA competition on Monday versus Guatemala while the U.S. has a day off before returning to the court to face El Salvador on Tuesday, Aug. 5, at 6 p.m.

Mexico and Puerto Rico also won preliminary round matches on Sunday in Pool B, defeating the Virgin Islands and Costa Rica, respectively, in three sets apiece.

“It is always great to play for your country, and for these guys it’s the first time to play and represent their country so I think there is some excitement and some nerves,” said Team USA head coach Andy Read. “Our opponent was good, and they play different than we do so it took us a little time to adjust. But I thought we served the ball very well, passed the ball very well and we blocked the ball very well.”

“I thought we did good today,” added Davis. “We weren’t really expecting the slower pace so it took us a little while to get used to it. But it feels really good to represent the U.S.”

Davis posted a team-high tying six kills on 11 attacks, five blocks, a service ace and a dig to lead Team USA in the opener. Scott Kevorken (Westlake Village, Calif.) scored nine points, with a match-high three service aces and six kills on nine attempts.

Team USA was dominant in both serving and blocking, building the 10-0 advantage in service aces, while taking the lead in team blocks, 21-11. The U.S. also owned the 21-15 margin in digs, and posted a .500 attack percentage while Guatemala hit just .250.

Team captain Jake Kneller (Westlake Village, Calif.) added seven points on five kills and a pair of aces, while Taylor Sander (Norco, Calif.) finished with six points on four kills and a pair of service aces. Libero Evan Mottram (Leona Valley, Calif.) contributed a team-high eight digs.

The U.S. started Oliver Deutschman (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) – who finished with a match-high 18 assists – at setter, Kevorken and Davis at middle and Sander, Kneller and Ian Satterfield (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) at outside hitter.

Hector Juarez and Flores Jeyson Neryy led Guatemala’s effort with five points apiece.
