U.S. Boys’ Pair Advances to Beach Youth World Championship Match

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 2, 2008) – Tony Ciarelli (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Jeff Carlson (Newport Beach, Calif.) have overcome a 19th seed to advance to the gold-medal match of the SWATCH FIVB Youth World Championships in The Hague, Netherlands.

Ciarelli and Carlson upset top-seeded Christiaan Varenhorst and Johan van der Poel of host country Netherlands 23-21, 21-19 in the quarterfinal round. The U.S. pair rallied from a four-point deficit in the first set and a six-point deficit in the second set to stun the home crowd. The American duo, both set to be freshmen at University of Southern California this fall, then overcame a first-set loss to defeat 12th-ranked Castizo and Bouza of Spain 18-21, 21-17, 15-12 in the semifinals.

Ciarelli and Carlson are 8-1 in the tournament with their only loss against the U.S. duo of Maddison McKibben (Honolulu) and Will Montgomery (Santa Barbara, Calif.) during the pool play of the main draw. Ciarelli and Carlson will face Estonia’s Kristo Kollo and Oliver Venno, seeded 13th and undefeated in the tournament, in the title match.

The highest U.S. finish in the championship is a silver medal earned by Joseph Dykstra and Mark Van Zwieten in 2005. Estonia has never medal in the event.

McKibben and Montgomery, seeded seventh, lost to the third-seeded Polish tandem of Marek Leznicki and Damian Wojtasik 21-13, 21-16 in the quarterfinal round.

In the girls’ bracket, Caitlin LeDoux (Phelan, Calif.) and Tara Roenicke (Alta Loma, Calif.), seeded second, lost its quarterfinal round match 26-24, 21-9 to Russia’s fifth-seeded Irana Chalka and Ekaterina Karapischenko.

The 2008 SWATCH FIVB Youth World Championships, presented by RICOH and in its seventh year, comprises a field of for players under the age of 19.
