COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 2, 2008) – Three U.S. youth beach volleyball teams have advanced to the quarterfinals of the SWATCH FIVB Youth World Championships in The Hague, Netherlands.
On the boys’ side, the seventh-ranked U.S. team of Maddison McKibbin (Honolulu, Hawai’i and Will Montgomery (Santa Barbara, Calif.) ended up in the same opening pool as their compatriots, Tony Ciarelli (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Jeff Carlson (Newport Beach, Calif.), seeded 19th.
Both teams advanced from the pool McKibbin and Montgomery went undefeated, beating Ciarelli and Carlson, 21-10, 21-19. Ciarelli and Carlson won their other two matches, however, to advance to the first round of elimination.
In the first round, McKibbin and Montgomery defeated Poland’s Marcin Golonka and Nikodem Kalucki, seeded third, 21-15, 21-11. Ciarelli and Carlson beat Finland’s ninth-ranked Joona Manninen and Markus Väisänen, 21-18, 21-15.
In Saturday’s quarterfinals, McKibbin and Montgomery will face Poland’s third-seeded Marek Leznicki and Damian Wojtasik. Ciarelli and Carlson will play the top-seeded Christiaan Varenhorst and Johan van der Poel of Netherlands.
In the girls’ bracket, the U.S. team of Caitlin Ledoux (Phelan, Calif.) and Tara Roenicke (Alta Loma, Calif.), seeded second, won all three of its pool play matches to advance to the first round of elimination.
In the first round, Ledoux and Roenicke defeated Ukraine’s 15th-ranked Maryna Samoday and Tetyna Sukach, 10-21, 21-19, 10-15.
In Saturday’s quarterfinal, they will face Russia’s fifth-seeded Irana Chalka and Ekaterina Karapischenko.
The U.S. girls’ team of Lara Dykstra (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Jocelyn Neely (La Habra, Calif.) did not advance from the qualifying round.
