COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (April 29, 2008) - The U.S. Women's Sitting Volleyball Team defeated Ukraine on Tuesday to win the bronze medal at the World Organization Volleyball for Disabled (WOVD) Intercontinental Cup in Ismailia, Egypt.

The U.S. Women swept Ukraine, 25-18, 25-15, 25-14, and finished the tournament with a 4-2 record. Netherlands defeated Slovenia in the gold-medal match, 25-16, 28-26, 25-20. Netherlands did not lose a set in the tournament and finished 7-0.

All four of the teams in the medal matches have qualified for the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing along with China, Lithuania, Japan and Latvia. The U.S. Women's Sitting Volleyball Team is ranked third in the world and qualified for Beijing by virtue of its fifth-place finish at the 2006 Sitting Volleyball World Championship and because the Afro Arab zone did not have a champion to send. The U.S. Sitting Women won the bronze medal at the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens.

The U.S. Sitting Women's Team, which is based at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, will play next at the U.S. Adult Open Volleyball Championships on May 23-31.

The team will leave for Beijing on Aug. 31 and the Paralympics will take place Sept. 6-17.
