ANAHEIM, Calif. (Aug. 18, 2006) - The U.S. Men's National Team got off to a hot start and then cooled off considerably as it fell to Serbia & Montenegro, 3-2 (25-21, 26-24, 16-25, 16-25, 15-13), on Friday at their 2006 FIVB World League match before approximately 7,000 fans in Beograd, Serbia.
The loss ends any hope the U.S. Men had of winning their pool, as their World League record falls to 5-6. Serbia & Montenegro improves to 8-3. The two teams will meet again for their final pool play match on Saturday in Novi Sad, Serbia. The match will take place at 8 p.m. local time, which is 11 a.m. PDT and 2 p.m. EDT. The matches will not be televised in the United States, but live scoring updates are available at http://www.fivb.org/EN/Volleyball/Competitions/WorldLeague/2006/Scorebox/Scorebox.asp?sm=123.
Japan and Poland, the other two teams in the pool, play Aug. 19-20 in Poland. Poland sits in second behind Serbia & Montenegro with a 7-3 record.
Reid Priddy (Richmond, Va.) led the U.S. Men in scoring with 19 points on 16 kills, two aces and one block. Opposite Clay Stanley (Honolulu, Hawaii) added 18 points on 17 kills and one block. Phil Eatherton (Glencoe, Mo.) scored 11 points and Ryan Millar (Palmdale, Calif.) and Jim Polster (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) each contributed 10.
However, the United States could not find an answer for 6-foot-7 opposite Ivan Miljkovic, who finished with 29 points, including 27 kills. Goran Vujevic and Andrija Geric each added 15 points.
The U.S. Men traded points with Serbia & Montenegro in the first set until the score reached 11-11. Then the U.S. went ahead 13-11 and maintained at least a one-point lead for the rest of the set.
Team USA took a 13-7 lead in the second set before Serbia & Montenegro came back and eventually tied the match at 22-22 and 23-23. However, the U.S. Men pulled ahead and won.
The U.S. effort stalled in the third set, when Serbia & Montenegro started Aleksandar Mitrovic at outside hitter instead of Slobodan Boskan, who had not scored any points. Mitrovic went on to score eight points and Serbia & Montenegro went on to win the match and move into first place in Pool A.
