L.E.A.R.N., established in 2004, is dedicated to funding free academic assistance and after school programs for schools in Los Angeles County. Its main mission is to encourage a culture of learning by securing and providing resources to students and families in areas of need.
Within the L.E.A.R.N. Organization is KidsPlay, an after school program for elementary schools that teaches students the fundamentals of sports and enhances characteristics of each team player. KidsPlay is provided for elementary schools who have been forced to abandon their sports programs due to budget cuts. Along with collaborations from the Los Angeles Team Handball Club, USA Team Handball, LA84 Foundation, and the USA Women’s Western Regional Coach Julio Sainz, KidsPlay has been able to establish its first Team Handball program. With over 350 children participating in the Saturday, March 8th Shoot-Out, each child will compete in two traditional team handball games against different participating schools. L.E.A.R.N.‘s Olympic Handball League is one of the first team handball league’s in the nation that has 15 elementary schools and over 350 elementary school aged students participating. The referees for the Shoot-out will be the players from the Los Angeles Team Handball Club. The goal of each KidsPlay activity is to make sure every player wants to come back and play again next year. The emphasis of this event is not on winning, but on player development and having fun.
