The USA Team Handball Women's National Team is competing in a friendly tournament in Puerto Rico this week. Team USA is competing against teams from Puerto Rico, Guadeloupe, and the Dominican Republic.
You could read a third-person recount of the matches. Or you could read the real report from someone with a front-row seat to the action, Women's National Team player, Lisa Dunn.
After once again traveling two hours to the Hardcore Gym in Rio Grande, we faced off against the knowingly strong opponent from the French islands of Guadeloupe.
Hardcore Gym, in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico
Team USA came out strong and scoring first, starting a goal-for-goal match through the first half. We went into halftime at an 11-11 tie.
Guadalupe came out of halftime with a quick two-goal lead, but they couldn't build it due to our strong defensive teamwork. Team captain Sarah Gascon came up big, hitting all six of the team’s penalty shots, in combination with clutch saves of our goalie, Staci Self, and some Team USA fast-break goals.
We took a two-goal lead with 10 minutes left in the game. But after a time out taken by Guadeloupe, the very experienced French team executed their plays well and re-tied the game with 5 minutes left. We quickly called a time out to reinforce our plan of attack, and we came out and executed it perfectly leaving Guadeloupe only one goal ahead.
However, the experience of Guadeloupe came through in this high-pressure game—they were able to run their offense calmly even with our tough defensive pressure. The final score was 23-21, a win by Guadeloupe. But the players made it a high-energy and very exciting game to watch for the Puerto Rican crowd.
Captain Gascon led us with 11 goals. We play the Puerto Rican Junior National Team tomorrow!
