LAS VEGAS - The 1st Annual Las Vegas - Sin City Cup Team Handball Tournament will be held Saturday and Sunday, September 28-29, 2013, from 9am - 5pm. Admission is free to the public thanks to a sponsorship by the host team - Las Vegas Scorpions Team Handball Club. The tournament will be held at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Paul McDermott Physical Education Center, Lied Gym.

The competition expects to draw eight men's and women's teams from the Western USA Team Handball League region. Those teams are: Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Phoenix, and the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA). Competitors range from amateurs to past and present Olympians. In conjunction with the tournament, a USA Team Handball Referee Certification Clinic will be held.

The Western USA Team Handball League was founded in 2012 by the following team handball clubs: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Colorado State University (CSU), Denver, Colorado Springs and the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA). The purpose of the league is to increase professionalism while implementing sanctioned International Handball Federation (IHF) and USA Team Handball rules. The league also aims to be a feeder of talented future National Team players who hope to represent Team USA at the Olympic Games.

The Scorpions have been playing team handball in Las Vegas since the 2010 National Championships were hosted at the South Point Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas. The team also has a beach handball program and have competed three consecutive years at the Huntington Beach Handball Tournament in California. Their involvement in community work can be seen by the YMCA Youth Program for Team Handball organization they established.

Team Handball is known to the world as "Handball" and is a fascinating game played worldwide by over 180 countries and 36 million people of all ages. Its most popular indoor version has been part of the Summer Olympics program since 1972 with numerous highly contested national, continental, inter-continental and world events including Olympic Games and World Championships.
