Athlete Spotlight: The Road to the IHF Cup

After what’s been an eventful weekend, tonight, the USA U-21s, coached by Julio Sainz and Mika Maunula, will battle the hosts Guatemala, in the first match of the IHF Continental Cup. This weekend 14 players gathered in Los Angeles for a two day training camp, which included two scrimmages against local club teams, LA Team Handball, and Cal Heat. The u-21’s dropped their first game to Cal Heat, but collected themselves the next day to defeat an extremely talented team from LA.
At 12:30 on Monday morning, the team boarded a plane, and flew overnight to Guatemala City at around 5:30 in the morning. After a morning walk through the city, and an extended afternoon nap, the team gathered to eat dinner, and discuss the game against the host country tomorrow. The game, and the entire tournament, is important. A medal will send the USA to Serbia for the intercontinental phase of the tournament, something they believe, is definitely within reach.
