Nine teams from across the United States and Canada competed in the annual Laura Walker Invitational Tournament this pasted weekend, March 29-31.
Hosted by West Point Women's Team Handball, the tournament consisted of 22 games over a three day span, with Levis A of Quebec, Canada edging New York City Team Handball Club in the championship match. Chicago Inter claimed third.
New York City Team Handball Club took home both the most valuable player and most valuable goalkeeper honors as Helena Gustavsson was named tournament MVP and Marianne Vanier was named tournament MVG.
Ashton Wolf of West Point Gold took home top scoring honors as she scored 22 goals in just three games of play.
Looking ahead, a number of the teams that participated in the Laura Walker tournament will face off again this weekend in Northeast League play in Rockville, Maryland as they attempt to qualify for Club Nationals in Reno, Nevada May 17-19.
In addition to the tournament, West Point held a social where all competing teams had the opportunity to establish lasting relationships with their competitors. The social concluded with a remembrance ceremony for First Lieutenant Laura Walker, a 2003 West Point graduate killed in Afghanistan in 2005. The ceremony was led by her father, active duty Lieutenant General Keith Walker and her great friend and former teammate, Jacque Messel (currently Chicago Inter team captain). In all, the tournament and social were a huge success and the team is looking forward to hosting the tournament again next year.
