March 22, 2012, 7:48 p.m. (ET)
USA Team Handball General Manager Dave Gascon today announced a distinguished panel of Team Handball Olympians to serve as the selection panel for the coaching staff of the 2012 USA Men’s National Team for the upcoming Pan Am Championships in Argentina.

Bob Djokovich, Michael Lenard, and Rod Oshita have agreed to work on the behalf of USATH to select the best possible coaching staff for Team USA’s Men’s National Team. Each has made significant contributions to the sport and has represented the United States in international competitions, highlighted by appearances in the Olympic Games. Djokovic wore red, white, and blue in the 1984 games, Lenard in the 1984 games, and Oshita in both the 1984 and 1988 games.”

Gascon indicated he has received a dozen applications from a “solid group of serious candidates.

“I wanted an outside and independent examination of our candidates. While these outstanding individuals are not really ever going to be outsiders, they aren’t directly involved in the current operations of USATH. They are highly respected individuals and are among the athletes who laid the foundation for the development of the sport in our country.”

The panel will screen the candidates and select the top contenders for follow-up interviews. The panel will rank order their top choices for the head coach, assistant coach, and team leader positions.

In the event the top choice(s) withdraws for any reason, the next person on the list will move up. Gascon indicated the Team USA trainer will be selected after a professional review and discussion with USATH Women's National Team Head Trainer Kim Moncel.
