Feb 27 Update on Elite Division berths

Feb. 27, 2012, 8:16 p.m. (ET)
In anticipation of releasing detailed information regarding the 2012 USA National Championships in Minnesapolis, Minnesota from May 18-20, the USA Team Handball (USATH) Competition Committee has the following update regarding Men's Elite qualifications and bids at-large (wild cards) still up for grabs.

Thus far, only two teams secured their spots in the Elite Division: NYC THC, from the Northeast region, as the 2011 Champion, and Carolina Blue, from the Southeast region, as a winner of a recent regional qualifier. It is expected that, under current rules, another two teams will qualify from the Northeast League that has its last round of competition scheduled for March 24-25 in Rockville, Maryland. Similarly, the West region has two guaranteed bids if it hosts its regional qualifying tournament before April 17.

From the Midwest region, the hosts of the 2012 USA National Championships, Minnesota Team Handball, have decided to opt out from competing in the Elite Division and given up their their automatics bid. This bid has became an at-large bid. Therefore, there are still at least four wild cards available that will be distributed based on ranking system described in the USATH Rule Book posted earlier this month.

Clubs are encouraged to play in the remaining tournaments this season and submit results from past events at info@usateamhandball.org dating back to September 2011, to receive credits/points towards the final rankings.
