London Olympics Handball Day 7

Spain and France move to the quarterfinals; GB and Sweden eliminated in the Women's Day 4 programme.

Sweden's collapse and eventual elimination following Friday's 25:24 loss to Spain capped a very disappointing Olympic campaign. Same goes for Denmark who was also sent packing early after losing a decisive game to Norway 24:23. Friday's 1 goal defeats punctuated just how competitive Group B was and how there was very little room for error...

GB played a close game against the Angolans but succumbed 31:25 to late game pressure and lack of execution down the stretch. England's Marie Gerbon was "en fuego", pouring in 9 goals. Both GB and Angola (who does have a mathematical chance, albeit astronomical) have also been eliminated.

Earlier in the day, France and Korea battled for Group B supremacy. And it was Allison Pineau to the rescue again for France, whose late steal sealed the 24:21 victory for France, handing the South Koreans their first loss of the tournament.

Finally, Russia and Brasil headlined yesterday's schedule, as they duked it out for 1st place in Group A. Brasil continued their fine form matching the Russians stride for stride. Unfortunately, the game turned on Brasil midway through the 2nd half. Trailing by 1 and with a player advantage, Brasil missed two consecutive 7 meter shots, and the opportunity to take a 1 goal lead.

Russia recovered following an Evgeny Trefilov customary team "tet-a-tet", then stretched the lead to 5 goals for an eventual 31:27 win.
