More than 75 athletes aiming to join the Men’s Youth or Senior National Teams will participate this Memorial Day weekend at USA Team Handball’s regional camps in Los Angeles, Chicago and New York.
The regional camps officially kick off the rebuilding of the USA Men’s National teams and will begin a pipeline of up-and-coming athletes, with the goal of qualifying senior men's teams for the 2011 Pan American Games and the 2012 Olympic Games. Attendees, aged below and above 18, will undergo rigorous training sessions; top-performing athletes will be invited back for future regional or national training camps. Participants include recent competitors at USATH’s 2009 National Championships, people discovered at tryouts, and collegiate athletes.
USATH Technical Director Mariusz Wartalowicz and handball Olympian Darrick Heath will coach the athletes in Chicago; West Region Coach Marko Brezic and Mika Maunula, veteran of the Finland Premier League and athlete and coach of the LA Team Handball Club, will train the camp in Los Angeles. Southwest Region Coach Boban Zivovic and Matt Sabatino, USATH Armed Forces Liaison, will lead New York.
