National team tryouts, West Point Invitational less than one week away

Jan. 11, 2009, 12 a.m. (ET)
Exciting team handball events in New York are less than a week away.

National team tryouts are taking place in the Arvin Gym at West Point Jan. 16 to correlate with the West Point Invitational, Jan. 17 to Jan. 18. Fourteen teams, including squads from the United States and Canada, will compete to be champion of the 33rd annual tournament.

In 2008, the Neusser handball club from Germany took first place, with New York City Team Handball Club coming in second. Neusser is not attending the tournament this year, but NYC will be back to battle on the court. Click here to see brackets for the 33rd Annual West Point Invitational.

One week after West Point, national team tryouts and informational handball clinics will kick off on the other side of the country in California.

Athletes will try out for the men's, women's and youth national teams Jan. 24 at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, Calif. On Jan. 25 at the same university, USA Team Handball will host a Referee Clinic to enrich and certify officials; the free Handball 101 Clinic will help beginners master the basics. Those interested in attending the Referee Clinic should register here as soon as possible, because materials must be sent in the mail to study prior to Jan. 25.
