Handball Season Underway
Dozens of handballers, from cagey veterans to first-time novices, have taken to courts around the country this week - including right here at headquarters in Salt Lake City. The Salt Lake Warriors' 2008-09 campaign kicked off Tuesday with practice at the sparkling Taylorsville Recreational Center with a record 50+ individuals. Among them were a regionally ranked decathlete from Utah State University, a recent arrival in Utah who played in her native Uruguay, a corps of student-athletes from the University of Utah and yours truly, the GM of USA Team Handball. Down in Tempe, Arizona, a club called Phoenix Rising has emerged from the desert heat. It's no apparition - Mark Denny and Shelby Slay are heading up men's, women's and youth teams and conducted their first practice on the same night as the Warriors. Up in the northwest, handball veteran T.J. Ogden has launched the Seattle Speed, with more than 40 individuals encouraging him. His efforts have been helped by the efforts of newspaper columnist Ron Judd who has taken an active interest in team handball since the start of the Beijing Games. Meantime, they're scrimmaging in Texas... at least five clubs are convening in Huntington Beach this weekend for a beach tournament... Chicago Inter is making plans for its October tournament... and the list goes on and on. If you'd like to play handball this season but don't have a place to play, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. We will do our best to find you a club in your area.
