Updates from the handball family for Thanksgiving weekend
As we head into the Thanksgiving weekend, USA Team Handball would like to share two pieces of good news. Congratulations are in order for Mike Cavanaugh and Gary Hines!
Hines departed this week for Germany, where he has signed a contract with the Bayerliga club DJK Waldbuttelbrunn. Hines, who previously played abroad in Spain, joins a club staring down relegation with four points earned in its first nine games. Hines' transfer was approved by IHF, USA Team Handball and the German Handball Federation last week. Waldbuttelbrunn, a community of just over 5,000 people, is located in the state of Bavaria in southern Germany.
Cavanaugh, who has been involved with handball in America for more than 35 years and led the U.S. Team Handball Federation for nearly two decades, was named the CEO of USA Table Tennis on Tuesday. Cavanaugh moved to USA Table Tennis from the United States Olympic Committee where he oversaw the sport of team handball as the USOC Manager of High Performance from 2006-2007 as that sport went through the process of selecting a new National Governing Body. Cavanaugh served two stints as Executive Director of USA Team Handball from 1986-1997 and again from 1999-2005.
Our best wishes to these two members of the USA Team Handball family, to the USA Women's National Team and Staff flying home from Mexico on Thanksgiving Day, and to all of you. Safe travels and Happy Thanksgiving!
