USA Team Handball Adds Key Staff
USA Team Handball today announces the appointment of two well-known veterans to key administrative positions governing handball in the United States.
Mariusz Wartalowicz, a resident of Chicago, is the new Technical Director of USA Team Handball, overseeing the development of the sport including club and regional competition, tournaments, coaching development and youth development.
Bruce Mosberg, who lives in New York, will chair the National Referee Committee, bringing his two decades of handball refereeing experience to USA Team Handball.
Wartalowicz' vast handball resume dates back nearly 40 years from his start as a youth handball player in Warsaw, Poland. He played for the AZS AWF Warsawa and WKS Zegrze handball clubs before emigrating to the United States. In the United States, he founded the Cracovia Chicago club and recently has been General Manager of Chicago Inter. His experience includes a stint coaching the USA Men's National Team, serving on national Coaching & Methods Committee, international appointments on behalf of USTHF and more than a dozen appearances at Club Nationals.
He holds Master's degrees from the US Sports Academy and Poland's Academy of Physical Education - and has teaching and coaching experience at several Chicago area schools.
"Mariusz has a cerebral approach to handball and hands-on experience developing the sport in this country," said USA Team Handball general manager Steve Pastorino. "He is organized, meticulous, passionate and well-respected. I am very excited to work with him."
Mosberg, a former International Handball Federation referee, possesses expertise and enthusiasm for officiating handball. He has been involved in managing
officials for the prior handball national governing body as Chief Referee and for the Pan American Team Handball Federation as a Technical Delegate and Referee Supervisor at events. He attended the IHF Officials clinic in Mexico City in December 2006 and has developed clinic manuals and models for the United States.
In addition to his proficiency in officiating handball, Mosberg holds experience in refereeing ice hockey and women's high school and collegiate basketball.
"The officiating community was nearly unanimous that Bruce Mosberg is the one individual who can organize and communicate with the growing community of referees in the United States," Pastorino said. "Additionally, he will have the support of a committee of six other individuals who will help us accelerate the recruiting and development of the next generation of officials."
Both have already begun working on a part-time basis. Wartalowicz will complete the academic year as a school teacher before joining USA Team Handball full-time in late May.
