Dec. 17, 2008, 12 a.m. (ET)
USA Team Handball will hold several events this January at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, CA, ranging from handball lessons for beginners to national team tryouts.

Seasoned athletes will try out for USA Team Handball's national teams on Jan. 24. Taking place at Cal Lutheran, the series of physical tests and scrimmages will be the tryouts for the West region. Those interested should sign up here.

Anyone curious about handball but not quite ready for international competition is welcome to attend USA Team Handball's free "Handball 101" clinic the following day, Jan. 25. From 1 to 5 p.m. in the Gilbert Sports and Fitness Center at Cal Lutheran, participants can learn the fundamentals and rules of the game. Instructors will demonstrate drills and refereeing basics, followed by scrimmages to put everyone's newfound handball knowledge on the court. The clinic is free and open to anyone 14 and older. A refereeing clinic is also planned for the morning of Jan. 25. Former International Handball Federation referees Tugomir Anusich and Bruce Mosberg will instruct participants on the details of officiating from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Later in the day, referees are to use their skills on the court to officiate scrimmages. Successful participants will be certified to referee USA Team Handball-sanctioned matches. The clinic is free for members of USA Team Handball.
