Iceland scores late to tie Denmark in handball
BEIJING (AP) Snorri Steinn Gudjonsson scored on a penalty shot late in the second half Saturday to give Iceland a 32-32 tie with Denmark and a spot in the Olympic handball quarterfinals.
The top four teams in each group advance. Denmark (1-1-2) is a point ahead of fifth-place Russia (1-2-1) in Group B. Iceland (2-1-1) is a point behind first-place South Korea (3-1).
Konstantin Igropulo scored with 26 seconds remaining to lift Russia to a 24-24 tie with Germany. Florian Kehrmann got one last shot in the closing seconds for Germany (2-1-1) but it was kicked away.
South Korea beat Egypt, 24-22. Egypt (0-3-1) has lost its three matches by a combined five goals and is out of medal contention.
Helio Justino, Felipe Ribeiro and Silvio Laureano scored five goals each, and Brazil kept its hope of reaching the quarterfinals alive with a 29-22 win over China. China (0-4) is eliminated from medal contention. Brazil (1-3) will face Spain (2-2) on Monday for the fourth and final quarterfinal spot out of Group A.
Spain fell 28-21 to France on Saturday. France (4-0) is the tournament's only remaining unbeaten team.
Poland beat Croatia 27-24. Both those teams have qualified for the quarterfinals. Croatia (2-2) led 7-3 in the first half before allowing six straight goals.
