Romania improves to 3-0 in women's handball

BEIJING (AP) Ramona Maier scored 11 goals, and Romania beat France 34-26 Wednesday in a matchup of unbeaten squads in women's handball.

Romania led 17-13 at halftime and took its biggest lead, 26-17, when Maier scored in the 45th minute.

Romania improved to 3-0 in Group A, while France fell to 2-1. Pool play resumes Friday.

Norway defeated Kazakhstan 35-19 in its second straight blowout victory. The Norwegians put up the highest point total of the tournament, though none of their players scored more than five goals in the win that allowed them to match Romania's 3-0 start in the group.

China defeated Angola 32-24 for its first win. The host nation led 14-12 at halftime and dominated the rest of the way. Liu Xiaomei led the Chinese squad with seven goals. Angola has lost its three Group A matches by an average of 11 points.

In Group B, Russia pulled away in the second half to defeat Brazil 28-19. The Russians are 2-0-1, while Brazil is 0-2-1.

South Korea defeated Sweden 31-23 to improve to 2-0-1. Sweden fell to 0-3.

In the nightcap, Hungary defeated Germany 25-24 and improved to 2-0-1 while Germany dropped to 1-2.
