With so much activity, how can one stay up to date on the latest events and developments? The USAT website is a great place to start. Here are just a few of the useful things you’ll find here:
Referee Resources on the USAT website
Check out Competition Rules/Referees under the Resources tab. You can get acquainted with your the USAT Referee Team and download the most recent USAT Competition Rules.
You can also get a head start on your next referee certification seminar by downloading a copy of the PowerPoint presentation that we use for training. You’ll find it on the right hand side of the “Attachments” column above, titled Ref_Seminar_Draft_7. (By the way, the seminar training presentation is also a great resource for coaches who want to stay current with the latest rules and interpretations!)
Are you ready to take your next step in training? You can find the schedule of upcoming official Kyorugi and Poomsae seminars on the Referee Development Programs page.
Updated Code of Operations—now in operation!
The USAT Referee Code of Operations, which pretty much defines everything we do administratively within the USAT structure, has been revisited, thoroughly updated, and approved. Click here to download a copy. Of particular note:
• Promotion requirements have been clarified, and streamlined. There are now only two classifications at each level from D through A—D2 and D1, C2 and C1, etc. (Amanda Rubin, USAT Membership Services Manager, has the records in good order, so there are no more of those “missing promotions”).
• We’ve clarified the criteria regarding referee appointments for national events.
• We’ve clarified the guidelines for recommending qualified candidates to the WTF for International Referee certification.
USAT Poomsae Program—coming up to world standards.
If you’ve been to a USAT event recently, you’ve probably noticed significant changes in poomsae competition. USAT has been working hard to bring our poomsae performance up to world standards, not only so that our National Teams can be competitive in the international arena, but also to enrich and enhance Taekwondo at all levels in the U.S.
Sport Poomsae participation in the U.S. has increased dramatically in the last five years, with a total of more than 1,100 competitors (individual/pairs/teams) who qualified for this year’s team trials that will select the Junior and Senior National Team that will compete in the 5th WTF World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships (October 8–10, 2010, Tashkent, Uzbekistan,) and the 1st Senior Pan American Poomsae Championships (December 2010, Monterrey, Mexico).
The USAT website has an entire page devoted to Sport Poomsae. Referees and competitors will find lots of valuable Poomsae information—including WTF Poomsae Competition Rules, articles, videos, news, and more.
Our goal is to eventually apply the same judging criteria for all USAT Poomsae competition—not just WTF-style Sport Poomsae, but the open double elimination divisions as well. Our WTF-certified Poomsae Coordinators, Victoria Serbin and Raymond Hsu, have developed a series of Referee Certification seminars to get our referee corps current with the latest WTF standards. So far, we’ve held five such seminars and certified approximately 70 judges. More are in the works.
Get involved as a USAT referee
If you’ve been thinking about becoming a USAT referee, I have three words for you: Now’s the time. It’s easy to get started; just attend a one-day certification seminar in your area and now you know where to go to find out when and where they are taking place.
Or maybe you’ve already got some referee experience, but you’ve been out of the ring for awhile. Now’s a great time to get back in! I guarantee you’ll find it’s as much fun as you remember. (Issues with missed promotions, etc.? Get in touch with your regional Vice Chair, or contact Amanda Rubin. We’ll help you sort it out).
My door is always open. If you have thoughts and ideas on how we can continue to improve our program—and how we can continue to develop the best referees in the world—send me an email HERE.
We look forward to seeing you in the ring!
